Question by Prakash: How can I set up the DSL modem in Ubuntu linux for internet connection?
I have installed the Ubuntu linux in my system using XP and use the dual booting option. I don’t know anything using linux. I wish to know how to setup the DSL modem to get internet connection through USB

Best answer:

Answer by Kenneth J
you need to install the drivers for the USB in Ubuntu. they may not be available however for linux. it would be best to run your modem into the system using an ethernet cable. no drivers to install for the modem only for the network card. Ubuntu is a good version of linux but remember that linux and unix are open source and so no all devices will be supported for drivers.

Ethernet is probably the only way you are going to be able to go!!

Best answer:

Answer by Rosch
As far as I know it is not playable in Wine but it appears to run in Cedega, “a proprietary fork of Wine”.

Now another possibility is to install VirtualBox with Windows XP. If your machine is powerful enough this should work fine.

Best answer:

Answer by Colanth
xming is an X server, not a Linux emulator. Linux programs won’t run natively in Windows. (xming runs natively in Windows, but it’s not a Linux emulator.)

Best answer:

Answer by jerry t
There are others like codeweavers but unless the windows program has a lot of demand among linux users it is not likely that you will find a way to run it in linux.
You could try to run it in a virtual machine. Check out VMware. It is free for personal use.
Good luck

Question by Confused about life: I need to update Linux kernel to latest version using Ubuntu. How?
I am trying to update the latest version of Ubuntu Linux to the latest Linux kernel so I can use ndiswrapper. I am unsure how to install the kernel, however. How can I do this so I can get ndiswrapper running under Ubuntu?

Best answer:

Answer by inconclusive_conjunction
I’m assuming, for whatever reason, that you don’t have updates turned on automatically. If this is the case, either open your package manager and select “Update”, or open a terminal windows and type in

“sudo apt-get update”.

This will download any necessary updates. If their is a kernel (the latest version is 2.6.20-16 for Ubuntu), then you will need to reboot your computer. Then, you can install ndiswrapper.

You should be able to install ndiswrapper through “sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper”. It should work out any dependency problems for you, with no need to compile a new kernel.

Best answer:

Answer by Colanth
Flash drives have a limited number of write cycles. Operating systems write to drives a lot. Your flash drive won’t last that long. (With USB 3.0, coming out next year, flash drives will be as fast as SATA drives.)

Best answer:

Answer by TaintedJ
if you dual boot you could probably use something like virtual box to boot up your windows 7 like a virtual machine and then use office from there. If you’re feeling frisky you could try wine to install it in the ubuntu side, if wine fails then use the virtualbox vm of windows.

I just installed Ubuntu Linux. I do not know how to initiate Internet Connection. ADSL Working here with Windows 98.

Best answer:

Answer by bakegoodz
First, make sure you use the Ethernet connection on the modem, don’t use USB. Then go under System, Administration, Networking. Make sure there is a Wired connection in there and it is set to DHCP.
If no network adapter shows up, even though Ubuntu Ethernet support is awesome, it is possible you have a card that won’t work with Ubuntu. You can run down to your favorite big box store and buy one for $ 20 – $ 30. At lest 95% of all adapters will work. This list isn’t complete but you can find what will definitely work. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsWiredNetworkCards
Without more details, this is all I can think of.
